SL beat IND by 16 runs; level T20I series at 1-1

Suryakumar Yadav and Axar Patel’s valiant effort went in vain as Sri Lanka defeated India by 16 runs in the second T20I in Pune.

With this outcome the three-match series is now squared at 1-1.

Chasing 207, India got off to a dreadful start losing the top order inside the powerplay overs. Hardik Pandya was then caught-behind for 12 after the powerplay. Deepak Hooda and Suryakumar then steadied things before Hasaranga got rid of Hooda for 9.

Suryakumar and Axar Patel then stitched a 90-plus stand, before Suryakumar was dismissed for 51 (36). Axar was dismissed for 65 (31) in the final over.

Earlier Kusal Mendis and Dasun Shanaka smashed 50 each to drive Sri Lanka to a staggering total in 20 overs.

Mendis smashed a 27-ball 50, reaching the milestone with a six against Umran Malik. While Shanka finished unbeaten on 56 off 22 balls. The match started with SL getting off to a flying start with openers adding 80 runs for the opening wicket in 8.2 overs. Shortly after his dismissal Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals, before skipper Shanaka took charge. He smashed a 20-ball half-century.

Shammi lodges complaint against Nalin Bandara

Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva had lodged a complaint with the Cinnamon Gardens Police last evening (21) against Kurunegala District SJB MP Nalin Bandara.

Mr. Silva has told the media that MP Bandara had come to the Colombo Cricket Club (CCC) on the day before yesterday (20) along with some other people in search of him. However, Mr. Silva was not present at the CCC.

Mr. Silva’s critical response to a question raised by a journalist regarding a statement made by MP Bandara over the Asia Cup at a news briefing held at Sri Lanka Cricket is likely to be the reason for this visit, he said.

SLC ends contract with Tom Moody

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has parted ways with its Director of Cricket Tom Moody, after mutually agreeing for the former Australia international cricketer to exit his contract.

SLC confirmed this decision, made less than a month before Sri Lanka begins their Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, stating that as Moody was appointed by the now defunct Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) under former Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa, SLC no longer requires Moody’s services.

Appointed as Director of Cricket last February on a three-year contract, Moody was reportedly paid $1,850 a day plus expenses for the 100 days a year he was expected to spend in the country.

An AFP report on Monday cited a senior cricket source who did not wish to be named as saying that SLC “could not afford his fees in the long run”, despite having savings of over $40 million.

“We also feel we need a person who is more hands-on, who can spend more time in Sri Lanka,” the source added.

Moody and the TAC drew up a performance based pay structure for players, which was initially resisted by the national squad, but they subsequently caved after it was made clear they would not be considered for selection unless they accepted the contracts.
