EC to meet on Tuesday over LG polls

The Election Commission is scheduled to meet next Tuesday to take a final decision over the date of the Local Government polls.

The commission also says that there has been no response by officials to several requests for funds to hold the election as well as to the letter addressed to the President in his capacity as Finance minister.

However, the commission expects that there will be an opportunity for a discussion with the Prime Minister in the next two days.

As of now, the Election Commission has announced that the LG polls will be held on April 25.

MR hints of an election before December

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has hinted of an election before December this year.
Speaking to the media at the Abhayaramaya Temple in Narahenpita today (March 27), the former President also mentioned that his party is ready to face any kind of election which will be held.

“I think that the election will be held before December. I hope it will”, he said.

Postal voting for LG polls postponed again

The Election Commission has informed that postal voting for Local Government elections has to be postponed for the second time and a decision on the polling date is be taken in the near future.

In a statement, the commission has announced that the postal ballots will not be marked on March 28, 29, 30, 31 and April 03 as scheduled in connection with the local government polls.

Postal voting in local government elections was initially scheduled to be held in February.

The Local Government election is scheduled to be held on April 25, 2023.

Gazette on new date of LG polls, issued

The Election Commission states that new, gazettes extraordinary, have been issued on setting a fresh date for the Local Government polls.

The gazettes were issued on March 08.

Accordingly, all Returning Officers, in these communiqués, have declared that the Local Government polls would be held on 25 April 2023.

LG polls scheduled for April 25!

Issuing a release on Tuesday (07) Commissioner General of elections Saman Sri Ratnayake says District Returning Officers have been notified that the new date for the impending Local Government Elections will be the 25th of April.

The release further notes although the initial date for the Local Government Elections was set for March 09, 2023, unexpected and unavoidable circumstances including the inability to print ballots led to the postponement of the original date, hence the National Election Commission has deemed it more suitable for the election to be held on April 25th.

District Returning Officers have been informed accordingly.

Date of LG polls to be announced on March 03

The National Election Commission today (24) informed that the Local Government election will not be held on March 09, 2023 as previously announced.

The Commission stated that the new date to hold the election will be announced on March 03.

The Commission stated that the election is being postponed due to reasons beyond their control.

LG bodies under commissioner control if elections are delayed

If the Local Government Election is not held as planned, all Local Government Bodies will be moved under the control of the Commissioner from the 20th of March, as the tenure of the Local Government Institutions ends on that day.

Public Administration & Home Affairs Secretary Neel Bandara Hapuhinna stated that accordingly, the secretaries of local councils and municipal councils as well as municipal commissioners are expected to carry out the administrative activities of those institutions.

The petition filed against holding of the local government election is scheduled to be called up at the Supreme Court on Thursday (23).

Based on the decision taken by the Supreme Court, the election commission will meet on Friday (24) and take a decision.

As of now, the postal poll related to the election has been postponed indefinitely due to the failure of the government printer to deliver the required ballot papers.

The Government Printer took that step due to the non-payment of the required money for printing ballot papers.

Recently, Sri Lanka’s National Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that obstacles have arisen with regard to conducting the Local Government Election on the 9th of March 2023 as planned.

Number of LG polls candidates officially announced

The Election Commission has officially announced the number of candidates contesting for this year’s local government elections.

Accordingly, 80,672 candidates will be contesting for the election.

The list of all candidates contesting from each district can be accessed here:

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has introduced a QR code related to the 2023 local government elections.

The QR code will help find the names of the candidates of recognized political parties and independent groups contesting for the election.

The election is scheduled to be held on March 9.
