2nd reading of Budget 2023 passed

The second reading of the budget proposals for 2023 was passed in Parliament today (22) by a majority of 37 votes.

The proposals received 121 votes in favour and 84 against. One member abstained.

Tamil Makkal Thesiya Kuttani Leader C.V. Wigneswaran was the lone MP to abstain. Eighteen MPs were absent when the vote was taken. They included all MPs of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), who had announced that they would abstain.

SJB to vote against Budget 2023 tomorrow

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has decided to vote against the 2023 Budget proposal, during tomorrow’s (22) vote of Budget’s second reading, MP Tissa Attanayake says.

Earlier today evening, the Central Committee of the SLFP has also decided to vote against the Budget 2023 tomorrow.

The SLFP Central Committee has decided to vote against the second reading of the Budget during tomorrow’s (22) vote.

It has also unanimously decided to suspend the party membership of all those who left the party, including former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

Further, the SLFP CC has decided to remove Mahinda Amaraweera from the post of UPFA General Secretary and replace him with Thilanga Sumathipala.

Dullas urges Ranil to reduce his burden

Matara District MP – Dullas Alahapperuma requested President Ranil Wickremesinghe to hand over the responsibility of Finance Minister to someone with the expertise in the subject.

Speaking during the Budget debate in Parliament today (21), the MP pointed out that the responsibility of the Finance Minister cannot be successfully handled with the burden of executive presidency.

He also expressed his regret at the insurance given to journalists being scrapped from Budget 2023.

2023 Budget targets 7.9% deficit

Sri Lanka is targeting a 7.9% of gross domestic product deficit in 2023, down from a provisional 9.8 percent in 2022, with higher revenue offset by steep rise in interest costs.

According to the budget presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe today (14), the budget deficit for the fiscal year 2023 is estimated at Rs. 2,404 billion.

The total expenditure for next year will be Rs. 5,819 billion (19.2%) and the total revenue and grants will be Rs. 3,415 billion (11.3%).

RW slashes military spending from Budget!

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is to present the Budget for next year (2023) to Parliament as the Finance Minister at 1.30 p.m. today (14).
According to the Appropriation Bill recently submitted to Parliament by the President, the highest amount has been allocated to the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government which is Rs.856 billion.
The Ministry of Defence has been allocated Rs.410 billion while the Finance Ministry has been allocated Rs.613 billion.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed Parliament on November 10 that special security measures will be implemented in Parliament today.

Budget 2023 to focus on social welfare benefits for the needy

President Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of Finance will present the 2023 budget to Parliament tomorrow (14) aimed at creating long-term, stable economic growth.

The 2023 budget has given special attention to the sectors of the capital market, export market, labour market, and digital economy and it is expected to achieve the budget targets through the social market economy.

This year’s budget will focus more on providing social welfare benefits to the people who need them most and creating a policy environment to build the private sector as the driving force of the country’s economy.

Through the 2023 budget, the process of building a new economy tailored for the new world has been initiated aimed at creating a program to ensure a decent country for the youth.
